Being More Creative with Images -- Headers + Backgrounds / Text

Instead of using thumbnails directed to larger images, as I usually tend to do when a page has many images, I decided to simply place the large images on this page for easier reading in a manual style, which could perhaps be printed out. The result will be a much slower loading of this page for those using a dial up modem, as I do -- those with broadband will probably not notice the slow page loading quite as much.

3) SPECIAL PROCESSING / FUN STUFF -- now I use either -- (1989-1997) -- which, incidentally, is included on the CD which I sent you, or -- (1989-1998), -- which is also kewl but a tad more complicated. Either of these newer apps might also be used for doing everything I did above with the other, older programs, but since there are way fewer options/steps in the older ones, I don't have to toggle between so many options/steps to do the few simple operations I want to do, which actually saves me some time when processing a few dozen pics -- in any case, whatever one does with whatever app/s, it all takes its own good time, depending on the characteristics of the operating system of the computer being used! The vast majority of professional graphic artists use MACS.

PhotoDeluxe offers you 5 series of options, each having several fun techniques to enhance and alter your original photo --

Let me show you some of the things which I did with my original Tasha pic -- a couple of the results were used in these 3 Photo Tip pages, in the Header and the Background --

Application

Notes

my original dog photo file as taken with my Nikon -- pic #2478 -- cropped, as explained on the previous page

I DROP it into the PhotoDeluxe icon

using the ART / SKETCH option I then transformed my color pic into a black and white image -- actually I could have done the same thing with either

or

click Find Edges

I have now transformed Tasha into a kewl sketch in black and white

click Done

SAVE as pict

I am now going to further play with Tasha, this time in the Cooler options

click Emboss

the amount and depth of embossing and the lighting may be adjusted here

I had light coming from the bottom center -- you have to do some experimentation to see which light direction produces the results you are looking for

click OK and Done

SAVE as pict

using the Bas Relief option I first had to choose a color, then had to play with the relief options, detail and smoothness to decide what gave me the best results with the light coming from the bottom

click OK and Done

SAVE as pict

I then switched to the Crackle option for another kewl effect -- one which is used in the header and background for this page

click Done

SAVE as pict

I now varied the color somewhat and slightly changed the crackle effect in this final process

click Done

SAVE as pict

Each of the saved pict files was then processed as explained on the previous page, using

and

to change the size. brightness, color, and file type from pict to jpeg -- and, as usual,

was used to further compress the images for use on the web pages

You personally may only use a single application program to do all of this work -- I have been doing things this way since I started in the 1990s and keep experimenting to find easier, faster and better ways of doing the same thing. As I said before, the older apps are a lot simpler with fewer options/steps, whereas the newer ones have a lot of different steps to do basically the same simple things -- they do excel at loads of really kewl processing options to enhance your presentation.

If you already have a basic general understanding of the concepts which are contained on this and the first photo pages, perhaps you might like to try your hand at simple animations? Go to the last part of this series of tips which gives some insights into animated graphics
