OK, so after much thought you made some kind of a schematic diagram or flow chart showing how you want to arrange the various parts of your new web site -- although it will invariably change over time, this general outline plan will guide you to how to organize your files under various main pages / topics -- and then, finally, load them on the server of your virtual host, which would be, in this case, directNIC.
Your main page, the one that anybody sees when they type in your domain name, is always the INDEX page -- from there you add links to other sections of your web site, and each new page has a new name --

Let us say that you want to have a section devoted to Beanies -- ALL of those files might be designated with the starting letters bb, and you would have everything about Beanies in alphabetical order and easy to find in your site folder -- ONLY use capital letters VERY sparingly because they MUST be spelled that way for the page/pic to be located -- and DO NOT leave spaces between any of the letters or numbers -- it is also very easy to accidently type a , instead of a ., so be careful about that little detail -- Examples --

Although it may not seem important when you are starting out, but the use of the same simple initial code letters for a series of related files will become VERY apparent when you have many different parts of your web site and hundreds of files -- that way you can easily locate a file related to Beanies (bb), Attic Treasures (at), carnival glass (cg), teddy bears (tb), personal news (pn), your plants/garden (pl), your kid's pages (kp), etc. -- what letter/s you use is entirely up to how you want to plan/do it -- as a rule of thumb, SIMPLER IS BETTER.
Get everything organized into a main web site folder on your computer, perhaps each section could be contained in its own folder (something I do very rarely as I prefer having all the files organized in a single web site folder -- similar files being grouped together) -- how you organize them is entirely up to you and your past experience and preferences.

If you use the same file in other sections of your web site, you will only have to load it on the server a single time -- each file is loaded separately, NOT in its folder -- you will get the hang of it once you get started.
These are the files in my how to domain page, the one you saw before coming to this page -- the only thing I did NOT add to the server is the folder contaning the original pics I made the various images from [origs-domain.html]. I like to keep the originals for possible future use because they may be able to be reworked into something else, thus saving time.

On my Mac I can color code the files to distinguish them from other kinds of files, which can be helpful for many things -- with my eBay stuff, when the person pays, I make the files GREEN, when I send the stuff out, I make them BLUE -- if they do not pay, they would be RED. It simply helps organize things a little better.
And I would suggest backing up your folders and files just in case your computer starts acting up -- you do not want to lose all the work you did over many years just because the computer has Alzheimer's -- I use an external hard drive connected by FireWire, which gives an extremely fast transfer of data from / to the computer / external drive.
OK, so now you have gathered together all of your text and photo files, and are ready to transfer them to your directNIC server -- to do this you have to have / find an FTP application -- I have always used FETCH, but it is only available for the Mac platform.
You basically need four things to log onto your web site files via FTP -- the Host, your User ID, your Password and the Directory.
The Host is usually the web address of the server your web site is located on, in this case one of the many directNIC servers -- it will have a number similar to 163.42.30.21 -- there may be a set of 3 numbers in place of one of the groups of 2, but that depends on the web address of each server worldwide -- you just very carefully type it into that space. Your User ID and Password is easy because when you signed up for directNIC, you selected your own -- so this should not be a problem, and you already wrote them down somewhere and know where to find the paper!
The Directory is simply the name of your domain -- akTok.net, Cynchronicity.net, eBear.ws, eBears.ws, eRyan.ws, iBear.ws, iPenny.net, iPolska.ws, Kardas.ws, Sybil.ws, Slug.ws, TNickels.net, UniqueTreasures.ws, MFSOAB.net or whatever, and you do not have to worry about the case of the letter/s, capital or small -- it is very easy with directNIC and with other FTP resources -- when you really get involved in web site design, there may be many directories associated with a web site, and each has to be entered as such in that Directory space -- they will automatically appear in the FTP directory list, so once logged on to your main server directory, the others will also be there.
The following screen shots are from my FTP app, FETCH -- any FTP program asks for the same information, and you must be extremely careful to enter the correct data in each blank or you will get an ERROR message to the effect that you are not authorized to access that directory or some other dumb automated note.

I also assume that you may make your own shortcut or Bookmark for your web site using your FTP application, which would be a fast option whenever you use your FTP app. Name is simply the thing that shows up on your list of shortcuts and has nothing to do with the actual FTP process -- Unknown is simply a default.

Once you log onto the server via FTP, you are presented with a list of the files you have on the server, and you may delete or add files to it -- I think you can figure that out easily enough. I always keep the automatic button active because FETCH figures out if the file being transferred is a text or binary / pic file.

In the FETCH tool bar at the top of my screen there is a REMOTE option which I use to upload files to the server -- it shows the folder in which the files are located (how-to domain page) on my computer hard drive -- the hard drive is shown as the source on the upper right -- *OS-9.2.2 is the name I gave my hard drive -- I usually add the files one by one, but can also add all of the files in that folder at the same time using the ADD ALL button -- when I click to ADD a single or multiple files to the server, they appear in that space on the bottom -- easy as pie! Just click DONE and they start uploading to the server. I assume that it is just as easy using a PC as it is on my Macs -- after all, the concepts are the same, and so is the protocol.

It may take a few minutes for your new pages to be available for viewing, depending on how busy the servers are -- sometimes you can access the new stuff immediately after loading them, more or less as happens with eBay item descriptions.
N.B. -- Incidently, if you want to stash/park images on your new domain for use in your eBay auctions, you have to sign-up for directNIC's $15/year ad-free hosting, 20 megs of space (the same as with the hosting with ads, but it also allows you to do other things), which is a great deal -- you don't get any pop-up or other ads, and can do basically what you want with your web site. I may use this option for a couple of my specialized domains, since it is more than ten times cheaper than what I am paying for my five main domains, each/year, and it gives me loads of space and everything would work the way it does on my more expensive hosting plans, even better since it includes some things that I don't get with the others! I may start with one of my fossil domains, if and when I find the time, just to see how it works and compare it with my more costly current options --
in the meantime I have used their Java pop-up ad FREE hosting option for many of my minor registered domains, and one of the major minor ones, CapricornioUno.net, has 88 files in it and uses only 2.2 megs of space -- I had all of this stuff in another web site folder -- it took me slightly over 2 hours to fish all the files from that folder, which contains 2,467 files and 182 megs, reformat most of the text pages, change a couple file names and get it online -- you can compare, if you want to see what the old pages looked like, both versions of these pages -- OLD VERSION -- I shall eventually remove the old files from Kardas.net and use that space for bigger and better things, hopefully! At this point I could add a hundred files/day for the next 10 years and never run out of space, but won't live that long!

I have sent you a CD copy of Adobe PageMill v.3, which is the app that I have always used for my web sites and eBay stuff -- there is a User's Guide on the CD, but if you prefer a book, I saw a bunch of PageMill v.3 guides on HalfCom -- you now have the tools to start your web site -- how you use them and what you create is entirely up to you.
So there you have it -- if questions arise, feel free to email me or InstantMessage me, and I can walk you through any steps that you might find a tad challenging.
Hey, you are going to have loads of fun with your new web site -- what is contains and how you develop it is limited only to your imagination and creativity.
Merry Christmas
