Countdown to Christmas

OK, so you now have a domain name -- actually, I have it among my list of registered domains on my DirectNIC account and now have to transfer it over to you --
As it now stands, you have 20 megabytes of FREE space on the DirectNIC servers for this domain name / web site -- that can be a whole lot of space for a bunch of pages and pics. For example, my entire AppleBytes.info web site has 590 files in it with a total of 12.3 megs of space used!! The only difference is that I pay for that hosting and there are no ads from the virtual host on the pages -- only what I put there. I have many domains registered with directNIC, so I think I am going to start taking advantage of their free space and put up a single page on a lot of them, having links to my five other web sites and my eBay auctions -- the links will be my own ads to my own stuff! This should be a lot of fun and hopefully bring in bids because I know that many people check out my pile of registered domains to see if they are avalable for buying, so I may as well give them something to buy!
I suspish that the transfer process would be easier if you signed-up for DirectNIC, so that is your first step -- it doesn't cost anything, as I recall -- click here -->> directNIC -- I added a couple screen shots of their pages so you sort of know what to look for --
this is what you will see on their main page --
type only the name of your new domain in that space to the left of Search -- the Advanced button is clicked already -- NOT the ending, just the name, and click Search
that takes you to a page showing which top level domains of that name are already taken, one of which is yours -- yours will say NOT AVAILABLE -- or at least I hope it will -- the WHOIS database is sometimes a tad slow at updating due to their monster worldwide registry traffic, but within a day or two it is usually up there --
you can now check to see what kind of information I need to transfer ownership of the domain to you -- click beside your domain name on the WHOIS link thingy and you will be taken to a page with the current domain data on it --
you could have done the same thing from the main search, but then you needed to also type in the domain ending and check the WHOIS button --
the next page gives you the info about that domain in their files -- I would have to change the information in a couple areas -- administrative contact, billing contact, tehnical and some other area for contacts, so the data you see is what I need to get from you, including an email address that you want to use for the files --
OK, send me the info when you have a chance and I'll start the transfer thing chugging along -- then it's up to you what you will do with your new real estate on the WWW -- in the meantime you can be looking around for a Virtual Host -- right now you don't need one because you already have the FREE 20 megs of bandwidth = web space.
What would you look for in a Virtual Host?
1. a company that didn't start last week and has a good track record / up time
2. as much web space as you can get for the buck -- 200-300 megs of space would be kewl for starters -- all of Kardas.net is about 180megs right now
3. forget the POP account options, unless you want to use them -- I never do -- it's too much trouble
4. email forwarding is useful -- that way you can have email links on the pages go automatically to the screen name of your choice -- mine usually go to one of my AOL screen names
5. most other options are superfluous, unless you want to become a professional webmaster -- all you want or need at this point is a place to hang your web pages in a single convenient cyber spot, and all your pics for eBay and elsewhere, and to provide links to your eBay stuff and your private selling pages, family news, etc.
6. can I suggest a virtual host? Not really -- I use Interland.com for four of my five domains and they have been reliable thus far -- it costs me about 120 clams/year for each, but you can find cheaper with less space, and the cheaper you find them, the host provider dumps ads on all your pages to make up for what they should have charged in the first place -- my idea is that if I want ads, I put my own! You can usually get a month or two free if you pay by the year instead of monthly.
6. remember that when the registration expires in twelve months, you have to renew it again before the expiration date or somebody else will grab it -- it can usually be renewed for from one to five or more years --- some places only charge about 10 bucks/year for a renewal -- that's a huge drop from the 50 buckies they charged when I started years ago! And whatever you do, make sure that you renew it, OR do it for a couple years when the renewal comes up just to be on the safe side. There is a big flock of web vultures waiting in cyber space to get their claws on shorter domain names that they were too lazy, cheap or uninformed to get years ago!
I'm not going to advertise that I got you a domain -- maybe at Christmas, if and when I get my usual Holiday page up there, I may make a passing comment about it (and you already know how short my passing notes can be like!) -- and hopefully I can link to your very own Holiday page!
I don't think I have to again suggest using Adobe PageMill -- you don't have to know any html, you just type in stuff and drop in pics, which you know how to do already. I posted enough times on the list about it for you to have some general idea. Doing your own html is way too time consuming and can get tricky if you make a slight mistake -- PageMill does it all for you! You already have an idea how to put pic and text files on a server, so that wouldn't be a problem -- I think PCs use some FTP (File Transfer Protocol) that comes with their really convoluted web building program, FrontPage.
Above all, have fun! And Merry pre-Christmas !
Santa Sonny
