Salvador Dalí, Spanish, 1904-1989, Les Trois Soeurs Eilsner, ink and watercoulor, 46.0 x 32.0 cm (sight), 1944
Listed as number 163 in an auction catalog from Mid-Hudson Auction Galleries, Cornwall-On-Hudson, New York, sale date 20 May 1995.
Mrs. Joanne Grant, an unlicensed New York auctioneer at the time, sold this piece and was paid by the buyer. The buyer took possession of the art work. After the fact I found that she had several bidder names used in her auctions which were actually her's or associates' who also bid on items. I have no idea if my Dalí was "sold" to one of them!
For whatever reason, Mrs. Grant moved her auction site (same name) after several months to a new location at The New Windsor Shopping Center, New Winsdor, New York.
Mrs. Grant has or had several other localities where she was apparently in an antique co-op, the names and addresses of which I shall include when I find the reference in my files.
She also began selling items on the eBay auction web site using her screen name mag2715jag@aol.com BUT designating the "seller" as her son. This screen name no longer appears upon doing a check of eBay sellers. because eBay changed all the screen names using email addresses as the member name. The aol screen name is still listed as a valid aol screen name and has apparently been changed to "male", probably referring to her son. It frequently still pops up on my Buddy List, where I placed it years ago, so it is still being actively used by the same individual/s.
After checking the WEB and making several phone calls I was informed by several sources that she had moved and set up a "gallery" in New Windsor, New York, and that her "associates" are located somewhere else. I called the New Windsor place and was told that they hold auctions every 2 weeks, so I asked to be placed on their mailing list. After giving my name, which they knew, I was placed on hold for several minutes for some strange reason!! I again called them a couple minutes later and asked if Joanne still did the auctioning and was informed that "she retired"!! I guess she well could, although I do not believe it!!
I consider this person an absolute risk in any kind of art/antique deals. She owes me in excess of $13,000 on the sale of the Dalí (among others), and refused to make good on the debt.
These are NOT allegations -- I have several files of FACT documents relative to this art swindle.
15 May 2004 -- I received an email from a gentleman in the western US saying he was considering Joanne Grant to sell a large collection of art works, asking my opinion based on the above, so I assume that she is still active in her business -- I wished him luck! Then, after checking through some old files on my previous computer I found that she sells on eBay under the very appropriate handle fair*warning !! On her eBay ME page, she presents a list of seemingly impressive auction credentials, but neglects to mention the several law suits her activities have engendered over the years, details of which I probably have on one of my yet older computers -- she still uses the same name for her auction gallery -- Mid Hudson Galleries P.O. Box 305 Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York 12520 -- her current eBay handle dates from Jul-14-98.
